Healthcare

The Health Care Issues Group meets monthly to discuss state and national health care reform issues and other health topics that members suggest. The current single payer bill under consideration in California, SB 810, is supported by LWVC and is a focal point for HCIG discussion, community education and local action. Members attend health care and health policy educational programs, sit on the boards of local health organizations, offer presentations to inform community organizations about health policy, public hospital and other health care related issues, and serve in health roles and on health committees for LWV state and county organizations. A list of resources on state and national health care reform is updated periodically for distribution to members. For more information on the group, call 760-736-1608 and leave a message for Vicki Beck.

Media Monitors

(formerly FCC Group)
Our purpose is to monitor the FCC in order to keep members informed on key issues that affect all of us. Our focus includes such subjects as Internet neutrality, media consolidation, the auctioning of the spectrum, and the regulation of cable companies. Individual members of the group keep tabs on various aspects of FCC activity and inform the group of new developments or emerging issues. As the FCC covers such a broad range of services, we can always use new members to follow the rapid developments in many areas under their jurisdiction.

New to League

Here's an opportunity for us to get together informally with our newer members and talk more about the service and fellowship opportunities available for you through League. It's your opportunity to discuss what you are hoping to give and get from your League. An enjoyable way to get better acquainted with each other and League activities.

Sustainability

As the world population grows, natural resources become limited, and climate warming has become the new reality. We all need to lead sustainable lifestyles. We must plan and act to create long-term environmental, social and economic vitality in our communities. We consider that local governments are in a pivotal position to lead and encourage the changes that need to occur. Last year we studied the projected effects of climate warming on the San Diego area in the year 2050. We also studied and created a report on the sustainable practices of the cities within our area. We hope to continue this effort, with the goal of promoting sustainable measures and legislation in local governments.

We hope to stay abreast of state, federal and international activities in the area of sustainability and climate change. Please join us if you'd like to learn, educate, or advocate in this very important area. Please call Diane Mochizuki if you have any questions, suggestions, or information that the group should study.

Women's Issues

This discussion group has learned that if you ask a question, the group can formulate an answer. Realizing the breadth of issues affecting women today, we have many questions that engage us in discussion. These raise our awareness and encourage us to advocate on behalf of women's issues. Our topics and themes include: equal pay for equal work, women's health demands, working families' concerns, women's rights and advancement, women's roles in public service and leadership roles. Come and join us with your concerns and views. Enjoy one and a half hours of engaging conversation with other League members.
