League of Women Voters of North County San Diego Presents "Jeannette Rankin Fights Back" about First Female Congressperson

In an upcoming one-woman play celebrating the 105th birthday of the League of Women Voters, Carlsbad resident Beth Rankin Urech (L) portrays her cousin Jeannette Rankin (R), the first woman elected to  the U.S. House of Representatives in 1916.

CARLSBAD, Calif. – January 28, 2025 – The League of Women Voters of North County San Diego (LWVNCSD) is hosting a unique event to celebrate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the national League of Women Voters. The public is invited to join League members for an exclusive performance of Beth Rankin Urech's solo play "Jeannette Rankin Fights Back” followed by an informal reception with refreshments on Saturday February 22 at 2 p.m.

League member Urech has written about her cousin, a feisty, forceful suffragist who was elected to U.S. Congress before women could vote nationally. Proud of being the only woman to vote to give women the vote, when asked at age 91 if she'd do it over again, Rankin proclaimed, "Yes, and next time I'd be nastier."

The birthday celebration will take place at the Woman's Club of Carlsbad, 3320 Monroe St., Carlsbad, Calif. with the play starting at 2 p.m. followed by the reception featuring cake and beverages. Tickets are $20 per person and must be purchased in advance at the LWVNCSD website: Click Here
