Join the League and our partners for "Unite & Rise for Voting Rights," a nationwide day of civic action marking the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
LWVNCSD is partnering with the Resistance Quilters of North San Diego and Palomar Unitarian Universalist Fellowship to host a postcard-writing session, and — in solidarity with United We Stitch, a nationwide community art project — a fabric panel workshop. Together we'll create fabric square "quilting blocks" depicting the future of the American Democracy we envision. You don't have to be "crafty"... all supplies will be provided and the blocks will be easy to decorate for all ages and abilities.
This is a day to put our hopes for a more perfect union into action, side by side with our neighbors. It's a chance to lift our spirits and unite around a shared goal: standing together to defend democracy.
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law that year on August 6th. This action, born from years of struggle for voting rights in the face of white supremacist terrorism, is widely considered to be the single most important step towards making our country an inclusive, multi-racial democracy. Luci Baines Johnson watched her father sign the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Since then she has been a champion for voting rights in the United States. So on Saturday, August 8, come join me as we Unite & Rise for Voting Rights! Come ready to write postcards to get out the vote this election season, or to cut, sew, paste and draw the Democracy you envision and the America you love. Your fabric square will become part of a series of panel measuring 5 feet wide by 3 feet tall (the dimensions of a household-size U.S. flag). We're currently seeking a venue to display the finished panels for an upcoming United We Stitch national day of action on September 20.
