Rank Your Beer with League of Women Voters North County San Diego

CARLSBAD, Calif.Feb. 27, 2024 – The League of Women Voters of North County San Diego is hosting a unique event to celebrate Spring while enabling local voters to learn about Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). Open to the public, the group’s “Rank Your Beer with the League” gathering on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 will include a “mock election” to demonstrate the use of RCV to choose a favorite beer at Draft Republic Carlsbad.

Along with heavy appetizers and door prizes, participants will have the opportunity to sample and rank a flight of beers following a brief presentation and Q&A about “Ranked Choice Voting: A Better Way to Vote” from Marcela Miranda-Caballero, Executive Director, CalRCV and Amy Tobia of Represent Us San Diego. These organizations are supporting voters interested in bringing RCV to elections in area cities including Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Oceanside, San Diego, and Vista. RCV is currently used for local elections in 47 U.S. cities including Oakland, Calif., Seattle, Wash. and Cambridge, Mass. It is also used statewide in Maine and Alaska. Several other states use RCV in party primaries and judicial elections.

League Chapter President Rosette Garcia noted, “The League of Women Voters [1] supports ranked choice voting efforts because we believe that  local jurisdictions should be able to explore alternative electoral methods that  encourage voter participation and provide the broadest voter representation possible. At the same time, we recognize that it can be confusing. We’re hoping to use this interactive experience to explain the process in a fun and memorable way.”

Slated for March 20, 2024, from 6-8p.m., the event will be held at the popular Draft Republic Carlsbad, part of the award-winning Cohn Restaurant Group, located at 5958 Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad. As space is limited, pre-registration is required and limited to guests at least 21 years of age. The cost per person is $50 — with proceeds in excess of costs going to support LWVNCSD — and includes a flight of four beers or a non-alcoholic option.
