CELEBRATE OUR LEAGUE BIRTHDAY!
In celebration of the League of Women Voters' 105th birthday, you're invited to an exclusive performance of the play, "Jeannette Rankin Fights Back."
We’ll be entertained with a performance of an original one-woman show written by our own Beth Urech, LWVNCSD member and cousin to the amazing suffragist who was the first woman elected to Congress — even before women could vote!
Followed by cake and bubbly: Prosecco, non-alcoholic Prosecco and sparkling water.
Hope you can join the celebration!
Although not exactly a household name, Jeannette Rankin was the first woman ever elected to US Congress in 1916 and voted against entry into both World Wars. Proud of being the only woman in the United States to vote to give women the vote, when asked if she’d do it all over again, Rankin proclaimed, “Oh, yes, and next time I would be nastier.”
Jeannette Rankin: June 11, 1880 - May 18, 1973
A feisty, independent and eminently quotable feminist and pacifist, Jeannette Rankin is portrayed with vigor and eloquence by Beth Rankin Urech, who just happens to be her cousin.
Beth Urech moved to Carlsbad CA in 2023 with her musician husband Mark Gillingham. They divide their time between discovering California and Boo, Sweden where their “two under two” grandsons Luka & Louie live.
Beth coaches speakers to present themselves and their messages with confidence and conviction. Currently she is writing a performance piece about boy actors in Shakespeare.
